How to Calculate a Social Security Spousal Benefit:

If entitled to your own benefit based on your work record, then your spouse is entitled to a spousal benefit based on your work record.

A spousal benefit is equal to 50% of your full retirement benefit. Your spouse must have reached Full Retirement Age (FRA) and you have filed for Social Security benefits.

Spouses are eligible to receive their own benefit or their spousal benefit, whichever is greater.

Say you’re to receive $600/month based on your work record and your spouse is to receive $2,000/month. Your spousal benefit would be $1,000, which is greater than your benefit.

Like your own retirement benefit, spousal benefits will also be reduced if claimed before FRA.
